Sri Lanka 5-Day Itinerary with a Private Driver

This Sri Lanka 5-day itinerary with a private driver suits first-time visitors who want a focused mix of culture and tea-country scenery. Five days is a short visit: choose a few memorable stops and leave room for airport formalities, meals and rest. The full route assumes an early arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) and a late departure on Day 5, or an extra night before flying. If your flights do not fit, use the shorter route below. With more time, follow our 10-day Sri Lanka tour itinerary.

Route overview: plan around your flights

Suggested nights: Sigiriya or Dambulla on Days 1 and 2, Kandy on Day 3, then Ella on Day 4 only if the departure plan allows it. Driving times below are planning allowances, not live traffic estimates; sightseeing, meals and airport procedures take extra time. Rain, road works and traffic can extend every transfer. Confirm the route using your actual arrival and departure airports, flight times and hotel locations.

Key Highlights & Takeaways

  • •CMB to Sigiriya/Dambulla: allow roughly 4–5 hours by road after leaving the airport.
  • •Sigiriya/Dambulla to Kandy: allow roughly 3–4 hours, plus any temple stop.
  • •Kandy to Nuwara Eliya: allow roughly 3–4 hours; Nuwara Eliya to Ella: another 2–3 hours.
  • •Ella to CMB: reserve roughly 6–8 hours for driving, then add rest stops, disruption buffer and your airline’s required check-in time.

Day 1: Airport arrival and Sigiriya or Dambulla

Meet your driver after airport formalities and travel to your hotel near Sigiriya or Dambulla. After a long flight, make check-in and rest the priority. Dambulla Cave Temple is optional only if your arrival, energy and opening hours allow it; otherwise leave it for Day 2 or the transfer to Kandy. For an afternoon or evening landing, stay near the airport and shorten the route rather than drive late into a full sightseeing schedule.

Day 2: Sigiriya and one cultural stop

Start with Sigiriya Rock Fortress in the cooler part of the day, allowing time for the climb and breaks. Choose Dambulla Cave Temple later if you did not visit on arrival, or enjoy a relaxed afternoon near your hotel. Adapt the climb to your mobility and the weather. Stay in the same hotel tonight to avoid unnecessary packing; do not force a distant ancient city and a safari into this day.

Day 3: Travel to Kandy

Drive to Kandy after breakfast, with Dambulla as an optional stop if still wanted. Choose either the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic or a relaxed lakeside walk after arrival, depending on time and energy. Wear clothing suitable for temple visits and check visitor arrangements for your date. Overnight in Kandy instead of adding another mountain transfer to the same afternoon.

Day 4: Nuwara Eliya or Ella — choose your pace

Travel into the hills toward Nuwara Eliya. Allow time for a tea-country stop and lunch. Staying in Nuwara Eliya makes this a gentler day and is the better choice when your departure requires a shorter final transfer. Continuing to Ella adds another 2–3 hours of driving after the Kandy–Nuwara Eliya leg; choose one brief stop on that version rather than a full sightseeing programme in both towns. If Ella is your priority, ask for a direct Kandy–Ella transfer and skip the Nuwara Eliya visit.

Day 5: Ella highlights and departure planning

If staying in Ella, choose one short morning activity, such as a Nine Arch Bridge viewpoint or Little Adam’s Peak, only when your departure buffer permits. The long drive to CMB takes priority. For morning or afternoon flights, skip Ella: arrange Day 4 near the airport, or move the flight to Day 6 and use Day 5 for the return. Do not book an early flight assuming an overnight mountain transfer will solve the timing. If departing from another airport, request a fresh route plan.

A gentler five-day alternative

For late arrivals, early departures or families wanting less driving, use Day 1 near the airport, Day 2 in Sigiriya/Dambulla, Day 3 travelling to Kandy, Day 4 returning toward Negombo, and Day 5 departing. This version leaves out Ella and Nuwara Eliya. If tea country matters more than Sigiriya, ask us to build the five days around Kandy and Nuwara Eliya instead. Private driver or train: protect your limited time

A private driver makes it easier to coordinate hotel pickups, luggage and flexible stops. Compare passenger and suitcase capacity in our vehicle fleet. A train journey can be a highlight, but waiting time, station transfers and delays can consume much of a five-day visit. Check the Sri Lanka Railways reservation and timetable information for your dates before building a day around a train. Confirm any driver luggage transfer and its cost separately, and avoid a train connection on your flight-departure day.

Budget guide: keep each cost category separate

Your Sri Lanka 5-day trip cost depends on the route, room choices, group size and paid activities. Use an itemized budget rather than treating a vehicle day rate as an all-inclusive holiday price. See the existing car-with-driver Cost & Price Guide for fleet rates and package limits.

Vehicle and driver

Request a total quote for all five days, with daily hours, total kilometres, extra-distance and overtime charges. Confirm fuel, tolls, parking, driver meals and accommodation separately. This route includes long transfers that can exceed a standard daily kilometre allowance; five times a day rate is not a confirmed route price.

Accommodation

Budget for four nights when arrival and departure fit the full route, or five if adding an airport night. Calculate rooms needed × nights × the hotel’s quoted room rate. Check breakfast, taxes, cancellation terms and whether driver accommodation is available.

Meals and drinks

Set a per-person daily allowance based on your preferred restaurants, then multiply by five days and the number of travellers. Deduct meals actually included by the hotel or tour quote; keep drinks and snacks separate.

Attractions and optional activities

List each paid attraction and check current tickets for each traveller’s age and residency category. Budget separately for local guides, train tickets or optional activities. Do not assume entrance fees are included in vehicle hire.

Putting the total together

Total trip budget = confirmed vehicle quote + rooms + meals + admission and activity costs + a contingency for changes. Divide shared vehicle and room costs by the number of travellers when comparing per-person budgets. International flights are separate unless explicitly quoted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:Is five days enough for Sri Lanka?

Five days is enough for a focused introduction, but not for every region. Sigiriya, Kandy and one hill-country stop can work with suitable flights; late arrivals or early departures need a shorter route.

Q:Can this five-day itinerary be customized?

Yes. Share your flight details, interests, passenger count and luggage so GUB Travels can suggest a route and vehicle that fit your schedule.

Q:Can I visit Ella and fly from CMB on Day 5?

Only consider it with a late flight and enough time for a long road transfer, stops, disruption buffer and airline check-in. A night near the airport before flying is the more relaxed option. For earlier flights, omit Ella or extend the trip.

Q:How much does a five-day Sri Lanka trip with driver cost?

Request an itemized quote based on your actual route and vehicle. Add accommodation, meals and attraction tickets separately, and confirm fuel, driver lodging, kilometre limits and overtime before booking.

Summary & Next Steps

Five days works best when the route follows your flights and interests. Choose culture plus one hill-country base, or leave the hills for a longer visit. Explore our tour packages, compare the vehicle fleet, and ask GUB Travels to plan a route with realistic transfer time.
